The Explorer Program provides opportunities for high school aged individuals (15-21) who are interested in learning/exploring different careers. Clackamas Fire District #1 believes that Exploring is a first and crucial step in beginning the journey to becoming a professional firefighter. Clackamas Fire District #1 is committed to providing our Explorers with the most realistic experience possible. The Explorer program is designed and will function similar to a Fire Science/Fire Academy, and will focus on the following areas:

  • Application/Interview Process
  • Basic Firefighter Skills
  • Academic Requirements
  • Advancement Process
  • Resume Building
  • Public Relations
  • Emergency Response
  • Crew Dynamics/Interaction

The goal of the program is to provide members with a basic understanding of the fire service and to prepare them for the next step, which may be:

  • Resident/Volunteer Firefighting
  • College Level Fire Science Programs
  • EMT/Paramedic Programs

Explorer Volunteer Requirements

  • Proof of eligibility to work in USA as per the I-9 immigration form requirements
  • In the age group of 15 to 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license if issued
  • Successful drivers license check clearance
  • Must be insurable by BFD/CFD insurance carrier
  • Successful background checks clearance
  • Successfully pass a UA drug screen
  • Successfully complete a BFD/CFD physical examination

Application Process

We are now accepting applications for new Explorers.

The 2015/2016 application process will be as follows:

  • August 01, 2015 (application packets are available online or may be picked up in person between 8:00am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday)

  • Application cutoff date is Friday 10/16/2015 by 4:00pm.

Other Activities

Firefighting is a very physically and mentally demanding profession that requires individuals to rely on one another for support and encouragement. To reinforce the teamwork and camaraderie, Explorers will be encouraged to participate in activities off the fire ground and out of the classroom. Some of the activities may include:

  • Annual Safety Fair
  • Camping
  • COPE Course (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience)
  • Hiking
  • Operation Santa Claus
  • Oregon City Clean-Up
  • Pioneer Family Festival
  • Snow weekends
